Pomade, clay, paste or wax: which one is yours?

Shine is the first question. Pomade gives it, clay kills it, paste and wax sit in between.

Fine or thin hair wants clay or a light paste: they add grip and fake a little volume. Thick, coarse hair can carry a pomade without going flat.

Use less than you think: a pea-sized amount, warmed between your palms until you can't see it, worked from the back to the front.

What actually happens in a hot towel shave

Two towels, not one. The first opens the skin and softens the hair; the second goes on after the first pass, to calm everything down.

The lather is whipped with a brush because the bristles lift each hair off the skin, which is what lets a straight razor cut clean instead of drag.

The whole thing takes about forty minutes and nobody will rush it. That's the point.

Grey beard: blend it, colour it, or leave it alone

A few grey hairs read as texture. A patch reads as a decision, so make one.

Grey blending tones the grey down without a solid colour, and grows out softly. Full beard colour is more even but needs touching up every three weeks.

Leaving it is a fine choice too. Keep the shape sharp and a grey beard looks deliberate.

Why every barber's combs sit in a jar of blue

The cobalt jar on every station is disinfectant, and it has looked like that in barbershops for nearly a century.

Combs and scissors go in after every client. Ten minutes in the jar, then dried and back on the counter.

We liked the colour so much we named the shop after the hour it matches.

The barber pole, explained in one stripe at a time

Red, white and blue spirals go back to the days when barbers also pulled teeth and let blood.

The pole stood for the staff patients gripped; the white stripes for bandages. The blue came later, in America.

Ours spin on Halsted and Milwaukee from 9 am until the last chair goes home.

The textured crop is still the cut to ask for

Short on the sides, longer and choppy on top, pushed forward with a little clay: it suits most face shapes and almost every hair type.

Ask for a fade or a taper on the sides depending on how sharp you want the contrast, and point cutting on top for the texture.

It needs a trim every four weeks to keep the shape.

Growing a moustache without the awkward month

Week two is the worst. Trim only the lip line and let the rest come in.

From week four, comb it down and take the corners in with small scissors. Keep it off the lip and it looks intentional.

A drop of balm in the evening keeps it soft and stops the itch.
